Rion-Antirion Bridge Traffic Study
One basic aim of this intermodal study was to forecast, on the basis of a review of available data & studies on the one hand & traffic counts & surveys on the other, the transport demand for an envisaged 2.5 km long bridge structure over the Gulf of Patras for a long term period of 20 years.
The outstanding competing mode to the bridge is the existing Rion-Antirion ferry boat connection. The other major objective of the study was to analyse the possibilities for levying bridge tolls & to determine an optimum strategy for tolling the bridge. Greece is divided into 13 regions; each region is further subdivided into smaller departments called "Nomos".
The area directly affected by the proposed Rion-Antirion bridge is composed of the departments of Achaia, Elea, Aetolia/Akarnania & Fokida. The other departments in the regions of the Peleponese & Central Greece, as well as Epiros, are also influenced to a lesser degree.
